The bison is such a special animal to me. It is my spirit animal, my guide in life. I have always been drawn to the gentle giants of the animal world. There are few bison left in the wild since bison farming for meat has become so prevalent. I think the bison have not been appropriately honored or respected. In the Lakota tradition it was White Buffalo Calf Woman who brought the sacred pipe to teach the people to pray. The pipe represents the uniting of male and female and in turn, connecting to the divine energy of the Great Spirit. The pipe was filled with tobacco and every family in nature was asked to enter the pipe and share its medicine as prayer and praise to the heavens. The smoke was viewed as a sacred and cleansing visual prayer. A white buffalo is a sign that prayers are being answered.

For the Plains Indians, bison were a major source of food, clothing, and glue. Buffalo medicine symbolizes prayer, gratitude, and praise for that which has been received and knowing that abundance is present when all relations are honored as sacred and gratitude is expressed to every living part of creation. Bison remind us that we must be humble enough to ask for help when we need it, and then be grateful for what we receive. I think my favorite part of buffalo medicine is the reminder to honor everyone's walk of life, even if it is different from your own.
